Stand Out From The Flat Metal Crowd
While corrugated iron dominates the New Zealand landscape, shingle roofing provides an immediate injection of character, wealth, and profound structural depth to a property. The overlapping installation method creates rich shadow lines and a textured profile that flat roofing simply cannot achieve.
Beyond aesthetics, modern shingle systems are highly engineered masterpieces. Asphalt architectural shingles feature a fiberglass core encapsulated in modified bitumen, topped with ceramic granules that reflect UV and resist algae growth. Cedar shingles offer the absolute pinnacle of natural, breathable insulation resulting in significantly cooler summers and warmer winters indoors.
- Exceptional acoustic performance completely deadens heavy rain noise
- Engineered to withstand extreme Auckland coastal winds and uplift
- Individual piecewise installation makes future repairs incredibly easy
- Significantly boosts property valuation and curb appeal
The Sarking Requirement
Unlike long-run iron, all shingle roofs require a solid substrate beneath them called "sarking" (typically high-grade H3 treated plywood). If you are converting from a metal roof to shingles, our licensed builders will precision-install the plywood substrate to establish a perfectly flat, structurally rigid deck before the shingles are laid.
Shingle Systems
We specialize in three primary shingle types, ensuring we have the perfect aesthetic and budget fit for your property.
Asphalt Shingles
Modern Architectural
The most popular shingle in New Zealand. Engineered with a fiberglass mat and ceramic-coated granules for exceptional durability and deep, striking shadow lines.
Cedar Shake
Natural Premium
Hand-split Western Red Cedar offers an unparalleled natural aesthetic. Naturally resistant to rot and insects, cedar shakes age gracefully into a beautiful silver-grey.
Timber Shingles
Heritage Restoration
Sawn timber shingles offer a refined, uniform appearance perfect for heritage restorations. Often required by council overlays to preserve original historical architecture.
Shingle Repair
Maintenance & Fixes
Missing or curled shingles? We professionally source matching materials to replace damaged sections, extending the life of your existing roof without a full replacement.
Precision Installation Protocol
A shingle roof is a complete system. We never skip steps, ensuring your warranties remain fully valid through strict manufacturer compliance.
Preparation
Complete strip-down to the substrate to inspect for rot, or installing new plywood sarking.
Underlayment
Applying heavy-duty synthetic waterproof underlay over the entire deck structure.
Edge Detailing
Installing metal drip edges and specialized starter shingles along the roof perimeter.
Field Shingles
Staggered installation of the main shingles following precise manufacturer nailing patterns.
Ridge Capping
Custom ventilating ridge caps to allow airflow and seal the complex peaks of the roof.
Shingle Roofing FAQ
Modern architectural asphalt shingles are incredibly durable. When installed correctly over premium synthetic underlay, they easily last 25 to 30 years in Auckland's climate. Premium heavy-weight options even come with 50-year manufacturer warranties.
Asphalt and wood shingles are generally light enough to be installed on standard roof trusses designed for metal or tiles. However, shingles require a solid plywood substrate beneath them (sarking). If you are converting from long-run iron to shingles, we will install H3-treated plywood sarking over your existing trusses first.
No. While this practice (called an 'overlay') is common overseas, New Zealand building codes and our own strict quality standards require a complete tear-off. By removing the old roof, we can inspect the plywood substrate for rot, replace the underlay, and guarantee a perfectly flat, watertight finish.
Untreated cedar is combustible, but for roofing applications, premium cedar shakes can be factory-treated with specialized fire retardants. Depending on your local council zoning and the proximity of neighboring properties, we will specify the correct fire-rated materials for your project.
